about

This extraordinary album, which was reissued on the occasion of our thirty years of activity, is a tribute to the great Trinidadian pianist Sonnie Taylor, who in these recordings, accompanied by singer Shirley Bunnie Foy and percussionist Anthony Ange Franzino, expresses all his musical nature connected to Africa and the spiritual roots of jazz music.

As we’ve had a close relationship with Sonnie since the early 90s (many will remember our reissue of Mayafra Combo's self-titled album on Right Tempo Classics), this project also brought us very much back to our own roots, right when we started.

It is worth noting that this LP came out together with our second-ever book, titled 'From Slavery to Jazz', written by Sonnie in the late 70s and previously unreleased. This was born from a series of conferences Sonnie held at Olivetti fabric in Ivrea, which had the aim of allowing the more sensitive public to deepen their knowledge of the music and history of the African-American people. The book is edited in Italian and English and is a powerful, yet direct and simple, historic testimony of the African-American music and culture “from slavery to Bitches Brew”, narrated from the eyes of a Black musician living in the North of Italy in the 70s.

It should also be noted that as the reels of these sessions are no longer available, we were forced to master from the original vinyl, trying to find the right compromise between sound quality and background noise cancellation, remaining at the same time faithful to the original sound of the recording. We believe the result exceeds in quality the original pressing and we hope it will meet the expectations of our most meticulous fans.

We would like to conclude by thanking Elsa and Maya Taylor – Sonnie’s wife and daughter - for giving us the opportunity to celebrate our thirtieth birthday with Sonnie Taylor's significant art.

“I'm a Harlem Flower” Bunnie Foy says to me with a smile when I go to visit her in her Milanese apartment, looking for ideas for these notes (the apartment is cluttered with books, records and music scores on which Bunnie practices non-stop and gives lessons to his son Tony who plays the bongos).

“I was born right in Harlem, where I've listened to an infinite number of popular songs of all kinds since I was a child. That's why I learned to sing spirituals, blues, classic and modern jazz pieces by Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerlad, and even calypso and African music. These are things that are all equally familiar to me. On this record, for example, I interpret a Gershwin medley but also Go Down Moses which is spiritual, Uelelé which is an Angolan piece and Way-o Comin' Home which comes from the Caribbean”.

[…] Shirley arrived in Italy in 1968 after a very flattering career start, during which she collaborated with famous names such as Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane. When she decided to settle in Milan she had already been to France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and North Africa. She realized it almost immediately: she was forced to tighten the belt and make unpleasant commercial compromises. But the good opportunity did not take long to arrive. It happened in the spring of 1970, when Bunnie was invited to take the part of lead voice in Enrico Intra's Messa d'Oggi, whose first absolute execution took place in the Certosa di Pavia. It was her luck. After a few minutes, all eyes were focused on the young and beautiful singer who accentuated the mystical and sensual atmosphere of the opera with each of her interventions. But it was the by now famous final solo of the Communio, to cause a sort of liberating catharsis. The spectators began to beat out the rhythm with their hands, prompted by Bunnie's intense voice, by the violent rhythm, exploding at the end into a resounding applause. [extract from liner notes by Franco Fayenz – 1974].
