As the 30th anniversary of Right Tempo approached a near mythical, unreleased recording emerged that would set the vibe for 'The Congregation’ album. It was discovered by Right Tempo’s art director Giulio ‘Jazzy Jules’ Maini. The track was recorded and produced in 2011 by NYC based Hiro Hawanohara aka Yellowtail and features the deep, smokey vocals of legendary beat generation jazz singer, Mark Murphy. He was 77 at the time!

Hiro’s mission to record Mark Murphy began in 2009 in NYC after missing a crucial opportunity to introduce himself to the singer at a show at The Iridium in Manhattan. Undeterred he continued to track the singer down. It took two years. A session was eventually booked on Oct 24 at The Hook Studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

According to Hiro, “We had to pace out the different takes as Mark was 76 or 77 years old at the time. He needed time between takes to rest his voice.” The remixes were completed in 2013. In addition to the brilliant version Patchworks delivered, Part-Time Heroes & Richard E also provided remixes which will soon be exclusively available on the newly established Right Tempo PRO series label in 12” format.

Mark Murphy was responsible for immortalising, in the recording studio, those mind-blowing Sunday afternoons at Dingwalls and when he passed away on 22 October 2015 in Englewood, New Jersey, we all felt we’d lost a friend. Hearing Mark’s vocals on ‘Seasons In My Mind’ is a wonderful thing and it sits beautifully at the heart of this album. [...]

‘Seasons In My Mind’ sweeps in like a cool Autumnal breeze and Mark
Murphy rides the waves of the horns and the gentle pulse of percussion to reveal a jazz master, a poet, at work. He takes a well-earned break over a sensuous guitar solo and returns to scat his way to a sensuous climax. Beautiful.
